From the Memphis Public Ledger, November 11, 1866. http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn85033673/1866-11-21/ed-1/seq-3/
“At the meeting of the R. E. Lee Base Ball Club, the following officers were elected: Joseph Wetter, President; Chas Gallina, Vice President; J. Trabucca, Captain; Joseph Meier, Secretary; F. Panesi, Treasurer.”
Although the name of the club implies a hard-core Southern identity, most of the initial officers of this club were immigrants from Europe, and not more than 20 years old. Meier was from Germany, Trabucca, Gallina and Panesi from Italy. I do not know Wetter’s birthplace (his brother William was born in Tennessee), but his parents were from Germany.
