On November 20, 1866, the Chattanooga Lookouts challenged the Nashville Cumberlands to play a Thanksgiving match for the state championship. The Cumberlands accepted, with the stipulation that the match be postponed until spring, as the baseball season was over. The Lookouts were not impressed with this response, which is understandable since the Cumberlands played the Edgefield Stonewalls on November 30. (The Cumberlands won that match, 56-43(!).)
If you read the notice below, the response from the Cumberland Club refers to a challenge to the Stonewalls, which is confusing. Perhaps the Lookouts had challenged both teams for the same championship, which then offended the Cumberlands. These two clubs had arranged for a match on July 4, but I have not yet discovered how that match ended.
