1869 Base Ball Championship of the Southwest

Public Ledger (Memphis, TN) August 14, 1869

Base Ball — The Championship of the Southwest was decided in favor of New Orleans.

A game of base ball was played at the Race Track yesterday afternoon by the Southern Base Ball Club, of New Orleans, and the Bluff City Club, of Memphis, to decide the championship of the Southwest. The weather was very hot, but still there was a large attendance of spectators. The following is the score: Southern, 25; Bluff City, 19. Mr. R. E. Warren, scorer Southern Base Ball Club ; Mr. J. R. Thompson, scorer Bluff City Base Ball Club. Umpire, Capt. Stein, steamer Robert Burns.

I don’t know how the “Championship of the Southwest” was determined, or what other teams were competing for that title. My presumption is that the “steamer Robert Burns” was the riverboat carrying the New Orleans team back and forth from Memphis.
